Bulk translations import/export

When do you need this

  • When you are setting up Peripass for the first time.

  • When you are configuring new parts of Peripass that contain a lot of translations.

The import/export functionality is not optimized for novice users of Peripass. It expects a good knowledge of all the translations and their meanings in Peripass.

Main idea

  • Export all translatable fields in Peripass. Translations that are not provided (yet) are also exported, but only for the configured languages.

  • Import new translations. All imported translations will overwrite the existing ones. You can import a subset of translations. Any translations that are not included in the import will remain unchanged.

  • Import history: to recover from mistakes, you can re-download a previous export.

How to use

You can export and import translations in Configuration > General settings > Import translations tab.

Steps to take:

  1. Use the "Export" button to download the translations file

  2. Delete all rows that are not applicable (optional)

  3. Add or update translations in the "Translation" column

  4. If you want to use the AI-generated translations, copy-paste them from the "AI-generated suggestion" column to the "Translation" column

  5. Use the "Import" button to upload the updated translations file

The import is added to the import history. The status will show "Import successful (no log file)" if all goes well, or an error message with a link to download the error log. In this case, correct the errors and try again.

AI-generated translations

When exporting the translations file, you can choose to automatically include AI-generated suggestions. You can apply this to all languages or limit it to missing translations only. The suggestions are added to the "AI-generated suggestion" column in the exported Excel file.

Because generating AI-powered translations can significantly increase processing time, the export is handled server-side. Once the file is ready, you will receive it by email, so there’s no need to wait in the browser for the download to complete (also when AI translations are disabled).

Filtering the Excel file

The exported Excel file can contain tens of thousands of rows. To easily find what you need, you can use filtering and text search inside a column to filter on a specific profile, item, category, etc.

Known limitations and checks on import

  • It is not possible to upload an embedded image as base64. Images should be uploaded once manually, so that a hosted URL is available.

  • If translations are too long, the export will result in a translation named “!!! TRANSLATION TOO LONG !!!”. It is not possible to import a translation with this name to avoid erroneous overwrites.

  • The import will check for duplicate entries.

  • Be aware that adding/removing configuration in Peripass can alter the available translations. This will render historical exports useless without a lot of manual tweaking. E.g., adding a new self-service kiosk will create a bunch of new translations. Removing one will result in a lot of object IDs not being recognised anymore.

  • The import will fail if the filename contains multiple dots. (e.g.. 'import.2024.xlsx' is not supported).
